Trades - Apprenticeship in Elevating Devices Mechanic

The Elevating Devices Mechanic program is a Skilled Trades Ontario apprenticeship whose in-school training component is delivered at Mohawk College's Stoney Creek Campus for Skilled Trades. Registered apprentices complete 720 hours of in-class instruction, combined with 7,280 hours of on-the-job training with a sponsoring employer, for a total of 8,000 hours. Coursework covers the installation, maintenance, and servicing of elevating devices such as elevators and escalators in accordance with government regulations and industry safety practices, spanning electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems. Training emphasizes hands-on troubleshooting and diagnostic skills alongside the regulatory knowledge required to work safely on elevating devices. The program follows an earn-while-you-learn model, combining paid on-the-job experience with in-school training blocks coordinated through the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. Graduates receive a Mohawk College Certificate, eligible for an Ontario College Certificate, and progress toward the Certificate of Qualification examination through Skilled Trades Ontario.
