Overview
This certificate program at NorQuest College prepares students for work as medical device reprocessing technicians. The curriculum covers anatomy and physiology, microbiology, infection prevention and control, workplace communication, and the procedures involved in cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing medical devices, preparing graduates to challenge the Canadian Standards Association's Certified Medical Device Reprocessing Technician exam. The program runs over two terms across 27 weeks and is offered either fully online or in an online real-time format with in-person labs; rural students attend eight in-person lab sessions held in Edmonton on Saturdays. Students complete 400 hours of work experience through a practicum. The program is available to students in Edmonton and in rural communities located 50 or more kilometres from the city. It suits students who work well in a team environment, have good communication skills, can manage physical demands such as extended standing and lifting up to 35 pounds, are available for shift work including evenings and weekends, and are comfortable working with blood and other biomaterials.

Admission Requirements: Entry requires English Language Arts 30-1 at 60% or 30-2 at 70% (or ESLG 1860/1898 equivalents), or alternatively 70% or better in the Open Studies courses HLTH 1105 and COMM 1001, or completion of the Bridge to Health Career or Health in English as Additional Language course sets; a free academic assessment can fill a missing subject, and a high school diploma is not itself required for entry though some certifying bodies later require one. Non-native English speakers need, within two years of applying: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6, TOEFL iBT 84 with no section below 21, Cambridge English 180 with no section below 165, CAEL 70, PTE Academic 59 with no section below 56, Duolingo 115, or CLBA/CLBPA with no section below 8, plus ILAC Pathway 3.3/ILSC Advanced 1 or specified NorQuest ESL courses. Before practicum, applicants need a clear Police Information Check, a current immunization record, and current WHMIS and bloodborne-pathogen-exposure certification. A 2.70 GPA per term and cumulatively is required, with no failing or withdrawn-failing grades permitted, and travel of up to 100 km or relocation within Alberta may be needed. The programme is not currently open to international students.
