Program details

Overview

This four-week, in-person program at the Campbell River campus bundles seven courses — core Transport Canada certifications (Small Vessel Operator Certificate, Domestic Vessel Safety, Maritime Commercial Radio Operator Certificate) alongside Marine Basic First Aid, FoodSafe Level 1, WHMIS and a career-readiness course — into a single statement of completion for domestic applicants. FoodSafe Level 1 and WHMIS build workplace safety fundamentals common to food handling and hazardous-materials environments aboard vessels, while the career-readiness course prepares graduates for the job search itself. Because Transport Canada regulations require students to understand spoken commands and safety information at sea, English proficiency is a condition of enrolment. Graduates head into commercial fishing, small passenger vessels or eco-tourism operations, with sea-time hours earned on the job afterwards opening a path toward the higher Master, Limited (under 60 GT) certification.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants only. No previous marine or industry experience is required to enrol; the program is designed as an entry point for people seeking work in the marine sector as well as for those wanting to build on existing experience. Because the courses include Transport Canada-regulated marine safety and emergency-duties training, applicants must have functional English proficiency: Transport Canada requires that students be able to communicate in, and understand, spoken instructions, commands and information used at sea and aboard vessels. Registration is through North Island College's Continuing Education and Training department rather than a competitive academic admissions process.

Application Details

Start Date: October
Application Deadline: North Island College's domestic applications open at the beginning of October each year for the following academic year; unlimited-entry programmes admit on a rolling, first-come-first-served basis with deadlines effectively at the term start (September 1, January 1 or May 1), while limited-entry programmes close earlier: the last Monday of August for a September start, the third Friday of December for a January start. International applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC; for the current cycle NIC has published deadlines of 1 May 2026 for September 2026 entry and 31 August 2026 for January 2027 entry, with no later 2027 intake deadline yet posted. Admission is otherwise rolling until seats fill. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
