Overview
The capstone level of NIC's metal jewellery ladder, Focus is built for graduates of the college's Foundation, Fundamentals and Fusion courses, or artisans with equivalent formal training, who want to move toward a business or professional practice. Over seven weeks of lectures, demonstrations and guided bench time in Campbell River, students refine precision tool handling, advanced stone setting and finishing, casting and mould making, enamelling and repousse, tool making and tempering, chain making and limited-series production methods. Weekly assignments lead into a capstone requiring three finished pieces that together demonstrate four distinct techniques. Classes run Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and students who lack the prerequisite courses can contact instructors directly to have prior experience assessed for eligibility. Tuition is $2,700, with students supplying roughly 35 personal hand tools while the studio provides specialized equipment and wholesale-rate metals.
