At North Island College in Courtenay, Canada, Trades - Apprenticeship in Welder: Apprenticeship - Harmonized is offered as a trades - apprenticeship in Trades programme. The programme runs for 10 weeks, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 2,800 per total for local students.
This program delivers the in-school technical-training levels of the Harmonized Welder apprenticeship, following the SkilledTradesBC curriculum designed for seamless mobility across Canada, for students already sponsored by a registered employer. It is offered full-time and in-person at the Campbell River and Port Alberni campuses across three levels of eight, eight and ten weeks respectively, with flexible start dates running from September through March in both the 2026-27 and 2027-28 years. As with other harmonized trades, roughly 80 percent of training takes place on the worksite under a certified tradesperson and 20 percent in the classroom. Level 1 covers tool use, oxyfuel cutting, fusion and braze welding, and shielded metal arc and semi-automatic or automatic welding processes; Level 2 introduces more advanced techniques, metallurgy, welding drawings and drafting, fabrication and cost estimation; Level 3 covers further advanced techniques along with quality control, inspection and industry standards. The program is limited to domestic applicants who are already employed and sponsored in the trade, and the college notes that strong math, reading and writing skills are important for success, given the technical content of the later levels.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is restricted to registered apprentices: applicants must be registered as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC and employed by a company with at least one qualified journeyperson able to supervise their training. NIC's calendar sets no separate academic grade, language-test score, minimum GPA, portfolio or interview requirement beyond this sponsorship, since the technical-training levels build directly on the apprentice's existing indenture rather than a school-leaving credential. The 2026-27 Campbell River intake runs on a rolling start between September 8 and March 23 rather than a single fixed date, and the certificate is domestic applicants only. Applicants who previously applied within the last year and want a subsequent level use NIC's Apprentice Training Registration Form rather than a fresh application.
