The Power System Electrician apprenticeship trains students to install, maintain and repair the high-voltage electrical transmission and distribution systems that deliver power to industries, businesses and homes. Apprentices typically specialize in substations, working with high-voltage equipment, or in metering, working with recording devices. Technical instruction is delivered on campus at NAIT in labs designed to recreate real-world working conditions. Coursework covers working safely with high-voltage power lines and electrical infrastructure, installing and maintaining equipment such as transformers, generators, voltage regulators, switches, capacitors and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, repairing or replacing faulty electrical equipment, inspecting and testing installed equipment to locate faults, and completing test and maintenance reports. On completion, apprentices receive a Journeyperson Certificate and an Advanced Diploma from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).
