The Emergency Medical Responder Certificate is a 15-week program at Northwestern Polytechnic that prepares students to provide basic emergency care to patients in crisis. The curriculum combines three 45-hour online courses with 164 hours of hands-on skill labs and a 16-hour Patient Engagement placement, delivered through asynchronous online lectures paired with mandatory in-person labs at the NWP Health Education Centre and the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital. Instruction includes practical assessments and scenario-based activities to build hands-on emergency response skills. The program leads to certification as an Emergency Medical Responder, a first step in the paramedicine pathway, and prepares graduates to assess and stabilize patients in emergency situations before transport or handover to further care. The certificate is a common entry point for students pursuing further paramedicine studies, such as the Primary Care Paramedic Certificate, and prepares graduates to work in industrial, event, or emergency response settings requiring an accredited first-response qualification.
