The Electrician Apprenticeship at Northwestern Polytechnic trains registered apprentices to install, alter, repair, and maintain electrical systems that provide heat, light, power, control, signal, and fire alarm functions in buildings and other structures. Coursework covers interpreting electrical drawings, testing and measuring voltage, and safely installing, maintaining, and repairing wiring and electrical equipment. The apprenticeship combines paid, employer-sponsored on-the-job training with four blocks of in-class technical instruction delivered on campus in Grande Prairie, alternating with periods of workplace employment; the first two technical training periods each run eight weeks. The program includes work-integrated learning throughout. Apprentices progress through all four technical periods and the required on-the-job hours under Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training before qualifying for certification as a journeyperson electrician in Alberta.
