Program details

Overview

Funeral and Allied Health Services at Nova Scotia Community College is a two-year diploma preparing students for careers in funeral directing and embalming. The program is delivered asynchronously online while students apprentice at a funeral home, combining theoretical coursework with hands-on work experience. Curriculum covers anatomy, pathology, funeral law and ethics, restorative art, business practices, and the psychosocial aspects of death and grief. Applicants must already have secured an apprenticeship with a funeral home before starting, and study is completed while working under that apprenticeship. The program is limited to residents of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Graduates are prepared to pursue licensure and careers as funeral directors or embalmers, applying both the practical skills gained through apprenticeship and the academic knowledge required for allied health work in the funeral services sector.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Nova Scotia Community College requires a High School Graduation Diploma or equivalent, a valid Class 5 driver's licence, and a letter from the funeral home where the applicant is currently employed confirming a secured apprenticeship. A criminal record check and vulnerable sector check are required, and at the start of the program applicants must provide proof of registration for their apprenticeship. First Aid/CPR certification and up-to-date immunizations, which may take up to 10 months to complete, are required for graduation.
