Health Information Management is a two-year diploma program, accredited by the Canadian Health Information Management Association, that prepares students to manage health information in support of patient care. Coursework covers computer technologies for capturing and analyzing health data, biomedical sciences, project management, patient record coding and classification, privacy and security, and healthcare law. Small class sizes support hands-on learning, and the program includes two mandatory clinical placements in public or private healthcare settings within the province, typically unpaid, giving students experience in real medical environments. First Aid/CPR certification and immunizations are graduation requirements common to Health and Human Services programs, and a criminal record and vulnerable sector check is required for placements. Students need access to a Windows-based computer, as some required software does not run on Mac. International students require a co-op work permit, including a medical exam, to complete the program. Graduates are prepared for careers in health information management, data collection and analysis, and data security.
