Health Information Management is a two-year diploma delivered on campus at Notre Dame Campus in Winnipeg, with a September intake offered in alternate years. The program develops the skills and knowledge needed to manage the health information required for patient care, administration, research, and education, combining medical, computer, and business coursework. Emphasis areas include health information science, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical coding, computerization, and statistical analysis, supported by practicum placements in health care facilities. Graduates are eligible to write the national certification exam administered by the Canadian Health Information Management Association, and successful certification allows them to seek employment across Canada. Enrolled students are also required to complete a Criminal Record Check and Provincial Child and Adult Abuse Registry checks after starting the program.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires proof of graduation from, or current enrolment in, Grade 12, including one credit of Grade 12 Biology (40S) or Chemistry (40S); Grade 12 Applied Math or Pre-Calculus Math (40S) is not required but is strongly recommended. Applicants who completed three years of full-time secondary education in Canada, the US, or an ELR-exempt country in English meet the language requirement; others must submit proof of meeting an approved assessment option, such as IELTS Academic (overall 6.0, no band below 5.5), CAEL (overall band 60), PTE (overall 54, minimum 50 per skill), Duolingo (115 or above, minimum 95 per section), or TOEFL iBT (4.0 overall, minimum 3.5 per component). Applicants must also complete an Applicant Declaration for Check Documents form and attend a mandatory orientation session. Mature applicants 19 or older who have been out of high school for at least a year may qualify by completing or enrolling in Grade 12 English (40S) and Grade 12 Biology (40S) or Chemistry (40S), in addition to meeting the other regular requirements. After enrolment begins, students must complete a Criminal Record Check and Provincial Child Abuse Registry and/or Adult Abuse Registry checks.
