Overview

Geographic Information Systems is a one-year graduate certificate program at Nova Scotia Community College that provides an intensive, post-graduate level grounding in geographic information systems (GIS). The curriculum covers managing and analyzing geospatial data, applying GIS technology across disciplines, using remote sensing techniques and developing customized GIS applications. Instruction takes place at the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS), a geomatics-focused learning environment. Students build technical skills in spatial analysis, cartography and database management that apply across fields such as urban planning, natural resource management, environmental science and business. The program benefits students with prior coursework or experience in geographic science and strong computer skills. Graduates are prepared for roles such as GIS technician, geospatial analyst or mapping specialist across public and private sector employers. The program begins in September and is not eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit for international graduates.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires a diploma or undergraduate degree in a related field such as geographic information systems, archaeology, geography, forestry, geology, resource management, urban planning, science, engineering, computer science, marketing, commerce, economics or business administration. Coursework or experience in geographic science and good computer skills are recommended for success.
