This program leads to a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Legal Studies over four or five years, delivered in-class at the Downtown Oshawa campus, examining the defining features, functions and social impacts of law. Students critically explore the social roles of law and its connections with community, government and society from multiple theoretical perspectives, studying topics such as national security, globalization, technology and the environment, alongside dispute-resolution methods ranging from court processes to mediation. Optional specializations include Alternative Dispute Resolution, Human Rights and Advocacy, and Law, Technology and Society. Students may also pursue a double major with Political Science, or an accelerated pathway completing three years at Ontario Tech followed by two years at Teesside University or the University of Aberdeen to earn both a BA (Hons.) and a UK LLB. A direct-entry co-op option offers full-time, paid work terms throughout the degree. It suits students aiming at law school, legal or policy careers, human rights advocacy, mediation, or paralegal certification.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M courses, including English (ENG4U). Admission is competitive: last year's cut-off was 70 per cent and the expected cut-off sits in the low 70s, so meeting the minimums does not guarantee a seat. Applicants whose first language is not English must present, within two years of the intake, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, Duolingo English Test 120, PTE Academic 58, CAEL 70 with no band below 60, Cambridge English Advanced 180 with no band below 170, or Oxford ELLT 7, per the university's general admission requirements. The program begins each September and January.
