This program leads to an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Legal Studies and Political Science over four years, delivered in-class at the Downtown Oshawa campus. The Legal Studies component examines the social roles of law and its connections with community, government and society from multiple theoretical perspectives, building active citizenship skills, critical reflection and respect for diversity, pluralism, equality and equity. The Political Science component addresses policy and social justice issues, focusing on the interrelations of communities including nations, regions, cities, towns and social movements, and on strategies for sustainable community and international development. Applicants must first gain admission to either the Legal Studies or Political Science program through the OUAC, then submit a Declaration of Double Major form after registering for at least one course, typically processed in August or September. It suits students aiming at careers such as legal analyst, legal researcher, government administrator, policy analyst, or mediator.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Tech University states no admission requirements specific to the Legal Studies and Political Science double major beyond the OSSD prerequisites it lists and its general English proficiency policy. Applicants need the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U/4M credits, including English (ENG4U). Admission is competitive: last year's cut-off was 70 per cent and the expected cut-off sits in the low 70s, so meeting the minimums does not guarantee a seat. Applicants must first apply to and receive an offer from either the Legal Studies or Political Science program through the OUAC, accept that offer and pay the tuition deposit, then submit a Declaration of Double Major form after registering for at least one course; submissions are typically processed in August or September. Applicants whose first language is not English must present, within two years of the intake, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, Duolingo English Test 120, PTE Academic 58, CAEL 70 with no band below 60, Cambridge English Advanced 180 with no band below 170, or Oxford ELLT 7, or an IB Diploma or certificate with a minimum grade of 4 in English A, per the university's general admission requirements. The program begins each September.
