Overview
This specialization is offered within the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Sociology, Technology and Innovation program, over four years, delivered in-class at the Downtown Oshawa campus. Students examine the balance between society, technology and human values, critically analyzing technological advancements and their ethical and social consequences, and building the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to navigate the intersections of society and technology and to contribute to informed, ethical decision-making. The specialization builds on the core program's exploration of how technology shapes, and is shaped by, society, including topics such as digital inequality and data ethics. It suits students aiming at careers in technology policy, ethics and governance, research, or further graduate study in sociology.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Tech University requires current Ontario secondary school students to complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M courses, including English (ENG4U). Admission is competitive: the specific average required varies from year to year based on school marks, subject distribution and performance in relevant subjects; last year's cut-off was 70 per cent and the expected cut-off sits in the low 70s, so meeting the minimum course requirements does not guarantee a seat. Applicants whose first language is not English must present, within two years of the intake, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, Duolingo English Test 120, PTE Academic 58, CAEL 70 with no band below 60, Cambridge English Advanced 180 with no band below 170, or Oxford ELLT 7, or an IB Diploma or certificate with a minimum grade of 4 in English A. The program begins each September.
