Overview
Child and Youth Care is a two-year diploma delivered at Red River College Polytechnic's Notre Dame Campus, with an August intake. The program prepares students to build relationships with, and support, children, youth, families, and communities, grounded in trauma-informed, relational, and anti-oppressive approaches. Coursework covers developmentally appropriate assessment and evidence-based intervention practices aligned with National Standards for child and youth care. Students must submit a criminal record check and provincial child- and adult-abuse registry checks, and cannot be listed on either registry; some practicum sites may also require proof of vaccination. Graduates are prepared for front-line child and youth care roles in schools, group homes, community agencies, and family-support organizations, and may pursue certification through the Child and Youth Care Association of Manitoba.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Regular admission requires proof of graduation from, or current enrolment in, Grade 12 including one credit of Grade 12 English (40S); final grades for enrolled applicants are due by July 15 for fall enrolment or by the deadline stated in the offer letter. All applicants must also complete either the college's Academic Communication Assessment (if they completed three or more years of full-time secondary education in English in Canada, the United States, or an ELR-exempt country) or one of the program's approved English language assessments, with results dated no more than two years before application, along with a completed Applicant Declaration for Check Documents form. Mature applicants (19 or older and out of high school for at least one year) may qualify with completed or in-progress Grade 12 English (40S) and by meeting the same English language requirement. After classes begin, students must also submit a criminal record check, provincial child- and adult-abuse registry checks, and current First Aid certification.
