SAIT's Pre-employment Refrigeration certificate is an intensive 12-week, full-time program that prepares students for an apprenticeship in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry. The curriculum mirrors the training a first-year Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic apprentice receives, combining practical skill-building with safety training. Students learn the basic principles of refrigeration systems and their applications, gain hands-on experience with trade tools and equipment, learn to diagnose and troubleshoot system malfunctions, install various refrigeration and air conditioning systems, perform routine maintenance, and study environmental regulations relevant to refrigerants and systems. The program aligns with the first period of Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training's Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic curriculum, and graduates may be eligible to register as apprentices and challenge the first-period exam. Classes are delivered in person at SAIT's Main Campus. This program does not accept international applicants.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants educated in Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and completion of Math 30-1, Math 30-2, or Math 30-3; English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2; and Physics 20 or Chemistry 20, or their equivalents. SAIT accepts recognized high school course equivalents for applicants educated outside Alberta. This program does not accept international applicants.
