Overview
This diploma program covers electricity and power generation, transmission and distribution systems, including integration of renewable energy sources, alongside electrical circuit design, automation, and industrial control systems. Students gain hands-on laboratory experience simulating real-world electrical engineering challenges and complete a final capstone project addressing an industry-related technical problem, supervised by an instructor and industry mentor. The curriculum covers national and international electrical codes and standards. Full-time daytime study takes two years; a blended evening/weekend format spanning three years, beginning each September, is also offered. The program is nationally accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada, and graduates are eligible for membership in the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta. Graduates are prepared for construction, operation, and infrastructure maintenance roles, with further education opening pathways to management, inspection, or power systems electrician positions.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants educated in Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and meet all of the following requirements or equivalents: at least 60% in Math 30-1 or 75% in Math 30-2; at least 60% in English Language Arts 30-1 or 75% in English Language Arts 30-2; and at least 60% in Physics 20. SAIT accepts high school course equivalents for applicants educated outside Alberta. Applicants educated outside of Canada must demonstrate English language proficiency and provide proof they meet the program's admission requirements through an international document assessment.
