This one-year apprenticeship, delivered in person at SAIT's Point Trotter Campus through the School of Transportation, trains apprentices to service and operate the hoist and swing equipment used to move machinery, materials, and other large objects, certifying them to operate booms with a lifting capacity between 5 and 65 tons. The single 12-month period requires a minimum of 1,200 hours of on-the-job training and six weeks of classroom instruction at SAIT. Graduates earn journeyperson status and a certificate of achievement through Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training. The program does not accept international applicants; apprentices must be Alberta residents (or primarily work in the province), hold Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, refugee status, or a valid CUAET visa, have completed English 10-2 and Math 10-3 (or passed all five GED/CAEC tests, or an Alberta Apprenticeship entrance exam), and must secure an employer willing to indenture them before starting.
