This one-year certificate program provides the knowledge and practical skills required for careers in water and wastewater treatment. Coursework covers water chemistry, microbiology and the physical treatment processes used to meet environmental and public health standards, alongside the operation and maintenance of boilers, steam systems, turbines, pumps, valves and plant instrumentation. Instruction combines classroom theory with extensive laboratory and fieldwork, delivered in person at Main Campus, and prepares students to write the Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators (AWWOA) Small Systems and Level 1 certification exams and the Alberta Boiler and Safety Association (ABSA) Fourth Class Power Engineering exam. Students complete a four-month, 600-hour practicum during their final semester at a water treatment, distribution or wastewater facility, which they are responsible for securing with SAIT advisor support. Graduates receive a SAIT Water and Wastewater Treatment Operations certificate. The program accepts international applicants but does not currently meet the field of study requirement for the Post-Graduation Work Permit.
