This three-year apprenticeship trains students to operate and service the hoist and swing equipment used to move machinery, materials and other large objects, including booms mounted on crawlers or wheeled frames and travelling, fixed, or climbing-type hoisting equipment. Training is delivered in person at SAIT's Point Trotter Campus using a blended format that combines scheduled classes and labs with unscheduled coursework. Each of the three 12-month periods pairs classroom instruction with on-the-job training: a minimum of 1,620 hours of on-the-job training and six weeks of classroom instruction in the first year, 1,800 hours of on-the-job training in the second year, and 1,620 hours of on-the-job training with six weeks of classroom instruction in the third year. The program is Red Seal endorsed, meaning the credential is recognized across Canada. Graduates earn journeyperson designation through Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training. The program sits within SAIT's School of Transportation and does not accept international applicants.
