Overview
Metal Fabricator is a three-year apprenticeship trade for which Saskatchewan Polytechnic delivers the in-school technical training portion in Saskatoon. Apprenticeship is an earning-while-learning arrangement: apprentices already hold a job in the trade and work under the supervision of a certified journeyperson while developing their skills through paid on-the-job training. This on-the-job training is supplemented by a required block of in-school technical training each year, covering theory, testing, and hands-on experience, scheduled as eight weeks per year across the three-year term. All apprenticeship training, including entrance requirements and start dates for specific training periods, is scheduled by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC), with which the apprenticeship contract is registered. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, graduates are eligible to write the examination to become a certified journeyperson Metal Fabricator.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: To enter into an apprenticeship contract (become a registered apprentice), an applicant must be a permanent resident or Canadian citizen, meet the proper educational requirements, and be working in the designated trade as an employee, employer, or self-employed shop owner. The signed apprenticeship contract is registered with the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC), which sets the specific entrance-level and technical training requirements, and the journeyperson examination, for each trade.
