Overview
This certificate prepares graduates for entry-level practice in the Human Services field. Coursework covers practical interviewing and counselling skills, written and oral communication, self-awareness and personal growth, critical thinking, team building and problem solving, and strategy skills for working with individuals, groups, and families, introducing feminist and Indigenous approaches alongside an anti-oppressive foundation throughout. A practicum is included, and the certificate transfers into two Human Services diploma specialties at Selkirk as well as related programs at other institutions.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Beyond Selkirk College's general admission standard (a BC senior secondary diploma or equivalent, or 19 years of age or older), this certificate (now published on the college site under the Social Work - Certificate page that the program's own URL redirects to) requires completion of English Studies 12 or equivalent with a minimum of 60%. No specific IELTS, TOEFL or other standardized English-proficiency score is stated on the program page; second-language applicants are handled under the college's general English-proficiency policy. Applicants must submit official secondary and post-secondary transcripts, and, if requested by a community partner, proof of a negative tuberculosis test or a chest X-ray less than six months old. A current criminal record check from the BC Ministry of Justice is required, and some types of record may limit or prohibit acceptance into the field placement that is required for program promotion. Basic computer competency (internet, email, word processing, file management) is expected. Intake is Fall only, over a 9-month program.
