Program details

Overview

This diploma prepares technologists able to assist across geographic information systems, microbiology, applied ecology, hydrology, environmental chemistry, and land-use and environmental planning. Graduates gain practical field and laboratory skills together with the technical competencies needed to present, evaluate, analyze, compile and acquire environmental information, and to integrate that information into formal planning and review processes.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: In addition to Selkirk College's general admission requirements, this Environment and Geomatics programme asks for three BC high-school (or equivalent) courses at a minimum of 67% each: Foundations of Mathematics 11, any BC Science curriculum course with a lab component at the Grade 11 or 12 level, and English Studies 12, English First Peoples 12, or ENGL 60. Applicants still in Grade 12 must show proof of registration or completion of these courses. No English-language test score is published for international applicants. Those short of the minimum may still gain provisional acceptance if registered in the prerequisite courses, provided the courses are completed by July 31 before the Fall term start date. A Class 5 driver's licence and Chemistry 11/12 are recommended but not required. The page notes the fieldwork is physically demanding — outdoor work up to eight hours a day in variable weather and rough terrain — so applicants should be in good health and physical condition, and entry-level computer competency (word processing, spreadsheets, web browsing) is strongly recommended. A completed application form, the required application fee, and official transcripts complete the file.
