BA/BS in Elementary Generalist

The Elementary Generalist Minor is offered by the Faculty of Education for students who want to study curriculum, teaching methods, and student learning in elementary schools, and may be added to any degree program. Students choose from courses covering mathematics, reading, and writing instruction in elementary classrooms, alongside options addressing Indigenous knowledges and languages and classroom assessment. The minor requires a minimum of 15 upper-division units, including Designs for Learning: Elementary Mathematics, plus one of a set of designated Indigenous-knowledges or assessment courses, along with further upper-division coursework such as Designs for Learning: Reading. Some required courses require students to complete a Simon Fraser University criminal record check. As with all Simon Fraser University degree programs, students must also satisfy the university's writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements. The minor supports students preparing for elementary teaching careers or further professional study.
