Overview

The Indigenous Languages minor is offered by the Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University. It is designed for graduates of the Indigenous Language Proficiency (INLP) diploma who wish to continue their studies toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, combining their language credential with a second academic minor as part of the BA's two-minor requirement. Coursework builds on the linguistic and cultural knowledge gained in the diploma, extending it through upper-division linguistics and Indigenous-language study. Students must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in the INLP diploma and completed the university's FAL and FAN general education requirements before being admitted to the minor. Students who have already completed three or more INLG or LING courses are advised to consult a program advisor to confirm their remaining eligibility. The minor supports continued development of conversational and literacy skills in an Indigenous language alongside broader academic study, and forms part of the university's wider commitment to Indigenous language revitalization.
