Overview

The French Certificate is for students who may or may not be enrolled in a degree program and who wish to improve oral and written French proficiency. It is also for those who wish to enhance their knowledge of the language for cultural or professional needs. The program is not intended for native French speakers. You'll study French language, writing, speaking, literature, and linguistics.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: SFU's French certificate sets its own course-completion bar rather than a separate entry test: a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average is required across all courses applied to the certificate. Individual FREN courses require Grade 12 French Immersion, FREN 202, FREN 221, or permission of the Department of French as a placement prerequisite. The programme page defers general admission to Simon Fraser University's standard undergraduate requirements: Canadian high-school applicants need at least five approved Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 or its equivalent at 70% or better in Language Arts 11/English 12, filed through EducationPlannerBC; international applicants submit a senior-year transcript with first-semester final grades. No IELTS, TOEFL or other standardized test score is published on either page.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
