Overview

The Legal Studies minor, offered by the School of Criminology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, examines Canadian law and legal institutions from a criminal-justice perspective alongside advanced study of criminal law, evidence, and human rights. It may be added to any Simon Fraser University bachelor's degree. Students must first complete 30 units, including all lower-division criminology requirements with a minimum C- grade in each, before applying to the School of Criminology for formal declaration. The minor itself requires a minimum of 15 upper-division units, at least two of which must come from a required group of criminal-law-focused courses (CRIM 330, 331, 335 or 338), with the remainder selected from an approved list of upper-division legal-studies courses. Courses are taught mainly in person at the Burnaby and Surrey campuses, with a small number offered online. Legal Studies is also available as a standalone certificate and as a post-baccalaureate diploma.
