Secondary Mathematics Education is an undergraduate minor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University, designed for pre-service teachers preparing to teach mathematics at the secondary level. The program studies the theory, design, and practice of secondary education with a mathematics focus. Students complete a minimum of 15 units of upper-division education coursework, including EDUC 411 (Investigations in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers), which examines secondary mathematics from an advanced standpoint through problem solving and connections among topics and representations, and EDUC 415 (Designs for Learning: Secondary Mathematics), which focuses on planning and teaching secondary school mathematics instruction. Students also complete one further Designs for Learning course selected from subject areas such as language arts, social studies, science, dance, drama, or physical education. Applicants must have sufficient coursework to teach secondary mathematics, normally equivalent to a minor in mathematics. The minor is intended for students in SFU's secondary Professional Development Program and complements a bachelor's degree rather than standing as a standalone credential.
