Overview

A 30-unit MSc offered in two streams - mathematics and operations research - expected to take six terms. The mathematics stream lets students choose a thesis (18 units, graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory) or a project ending in a written report and public presentation, while the operations research stream requires a thesis built on core courses in continuous and discrete optimization and advanced linear programming.

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.33

Admission Requirements: MSc applicants to the Department of Mathematics must have completed a bachelor's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, or its equivalent. Non-native English speakers must meet the department's own English-proficiency thresholds, which are stated jointly for the MSc and PhD programs on its admissions page: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each section, TOEFL iBT (internet-based) 93 overall with a minimum of 20 in each section, or TOEFL paper-based 580 with a Test of Written English score of 5. The GRE General Test and the GRE Mathematics Subject Test are recommended but not mandatory, and applicants must submit three academic references; complete applications, including all documents and references, must arrive by the stated deadline to be considered.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
