Overview

The Editing Certificate is a part-time online program aligned with Editors Canada Professional Editorial Standards, training students in structural editing, stylistic editing, copy editing and proofreading. Ten required courses and at least two electives run three to ten weeks each, self-paced within set deadlines, and the certificate can be completed in as little as eight months, with up to five years allowed.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 12 or its equivalent; mature students who do not meet this standard may instead qualify with at least five years of appropriate experience. The program links to SFU Continuing Studies' Advanced English Language Recommendations, which set an IELTS Academic overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0 and a writing band score of at least 8.0. There is no formal application deadline: applicants may take individual courses and apply to the certificate at any time, and a non-refundable $99 program application fee applies when the formal application is submitted. To graduate, all courses must be completed with a minimum average grade of B- (70%).

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, with one set of dates per applicant type rather than by citizenship. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
