Overview
The PhD in Interactive Arts and Technology at SFU's School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) is a research doctorate awarded for an original contribution to knowledge through a dissertation. Students combine methods from art, design, science, technology and the humanities under a supervisory committee, addressing the technological and cultural changes reshaping contemporary society, with completion expected in 11 to 14 semesters.

Admission Requirements: Two entry pathways apply. Applicants with a relevant master's degree (for example MSc in computer science, MASc in engineering, or an MA/MSc in education) need a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better at a Canadian university or equivalent. An undergraduate degree in a related field may instead be considered where the applicant shows high academic standing, defined as a GPA of 3.5 or better at a Canadian university or equivalent, together with evidence of research aptitude. All applicants supply three reference letters from suitably qualified people and a letter of intent covering their motivation, academic and research background, and proposed area of research and potential supervisor(s); a work portfolio and/or a personal or telephone interview may be requested at a later stage. Securing a supervisor before applying is not required but improves the likelihood of an offer. Admission runs annually, with early or out-of-cycle admission possible in special cases. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027.
