Program details

Overview

The PhD in Linguistics requires at least 47 credit hours, including two graduate seminars, approved graduate coursework, two qualifying papers (12 credits) and an 18-credit dissertation based on original research, with a written thesis proposal defended by the end of the ninth semester of residence. Minimum residency is five semesters, with up to 18 semesters allowed.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.50 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: PhD applicants to Linguistics must hold an MA in linguistics with a demonstrated specialization, and must have completed core linguistics coursework at the graduate level covering phonology and syntax in addition to the foundational undergraduate sequence (introduction to linguistics, phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics); the department defers its GPA floor to Graduate General Regulations 1.3.6a/1.3.7a rather than stating its own figure, so SFU's institution-wide doctoral threshold of 3.5 on the 4.33 scale applies. Linguistics sets its own, higher English-language thresholds for applicants from non-English-speaking countries: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in each section, or TOEFL iBT 90 or above with a minimum of 20 in each section (CAEL 70/60, PTE Academic 65/60, Cambridge C1/C2 180, or Duolingo 125/105 also accepted); every accepted test must include a writing component and scores remain valid for two years.
