Overview
SFU's MSc in Computing Science is a research-intensive thesis degree that pairs graduate coursework with supervised original research. Students complete a minimum of 33 units: five graduate computing science courses totalling at least 15 units, plus an 18-unit MSc thesis. Candidates must demonstrate breadth of knowledge across the discipline and the capacity to conduct and defend original research. Training spans theoretical and applied computer science, with hands-on work in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer systems and networks, computer graphics and data mining. The degree is normally completed within six semesters and prepares graduates for research and development careers in academia, industry or the public sector.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Simon Fraser University's Master of Science in Computing Science admits applicants with a bachelor's degree or the equivalent in computing science or a related field. Applicants without a computing science background may still qualify if they can demonstrate competency at the third-year level in three core areas, corresponding to CMPT 300 (Operating Systems), CMPT 307 (Data Structures and Algorithms) and CMPT 354 (Database Systems and Structures). All applicants must satisfy the academic requirements set out in SFU's graduate general regulations, covering residence, coursework, academic progress, supervision and demonstrated research competence. Admission to the graduate programs in computer science is competitive: only the best-qualified applicants are offered a seat. Fall 2027 entry: high-school-route applications open 1 October 2026 and close 31 January 2027, while transfer applications open 1 March 2027 and close 15 April 2027 (Education and Contemporary Arts transfer applicants may apply from 1 October 2026). Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline.
