Overview
This MEd route in Curriculum and Instruction builds expertise in an equity framework for education, understanding education broadly as encompassing schooling alongside the other social forces that shape knowledge in society. The degree consists of 30 units of coursework plus a comprehensive examination rather than a thesis, though students may ladder to the MA with faculty approval. Classes are taught in person at SFU's Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver campuses and scheduled in the late afternoon and early evening so participants can continue working, with an annual intake of approximately 10 to 15 students. The program is designed for educators and administrators moving into leadership on equity practice in their schools and districts, advocates working in non-profit and settlement services, adult educators, policy analysts in government and non-government sectors, media workers, and diversity and equity officers in fields such as health, corrections and law enforcement.

Admission Requirements: This SFU program in Curriculum & Instruction: Equity Studies in Education (offered as MA or MEd) admits roughly 10 to 15 students per cycle. Admission requires a bachelor's degree from SFU or an equivalent recognized institution, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (B), or 3.33/4.33 (B+) based on the last 60 units. Applicants submit three references, at least two academic and able to comment on scholarly ability and likelihood of graduate success; a sole-authored academic writing sample of at least five pages written within the last five years; a letter of intent of up to 1,000 words describing their reasons for graduate study, scholarly accomplishments and a research question or teaching-practice focus; a curriculum vitae of up to three pages; and unofficial transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proficiency through TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge English, CAEL, Duolingo or the Pearson Test of English, with scores valid within two years.
