Overview
The MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts, offered through SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts, provides advanced professional training for artists working in and across dance, film, music, theatre, and visual art. The programme develops each student's individual creative practice alongside technical skills, interdisciplinary research methods, and critical understanding of art's relationship to contemporary society. It runs as a full-time, seven-semester programme of original research and studio work, requiring a minimum of 35 units: 25 units of coursework plus a 10-unit artistic graduating project. All School for the Contemporary Arts graduate courses are delivered in person, and students are expected to be based in the Vancouver area for the programme's duration. Cohorts of roughly 10 to 11 students are admitted each year, with intake in the Fall term only. Applicants normally hold an undergraduate degree in a related arts or scholarly field, and applications include a curriculum vitae, an artist's statement, project proposals, a portfolio, an academic writing sample, and three references.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is normally open to applicants holding an undergraduate degree in visual culture, art history, cinema studies, performance studies, or a related arts field; a Bachelor of Fine Arts with substantial scholarly coursework is also accepted. Applications with a GPA below 3.0 are occasionally considered where the applicant has a significant professional art practice. GRE scores are not required. Applications must include a curriculum vitae, an artist's statement, three artistic project scenarios, a portfolio, an academic writing sample, and three letters of reference. International applicants must meet SFU's standard English language proficiency requirement; the Duolingo English Test is provisionally accepted through Fall 2026 with a minimum overall score of 130 and 120 per section.
