MA/MS in Teachers of English (MATE)

The Master of Arts for Teachers of English (MATE), offered through SFU's Department of English, is a graduate degree programme designed for practising English teachers in the elementary, secondary, or college system in British Columbia. It gives working teachers the opportunity to pursue advanced study in English literature while continuing to teach, admitting a small cohort of roughly 12 to 15 students at a time over a two-year period. Scheduling is structured to accommodate the demands of full-time teaching; a past cohort met at the SFU Surrey campus. A scholarship of approximately $2,000 CAD is awarded to the highest-performing student after four terms of study. Eligibility for admission is limited to teachers actively working within BC's elementary, secondary, or college education system. The programme is not currently accepting new applications; prospective applicants should confirm the status of the next cohort with the Department of English before applying.
