Overview

The English and Global Humanities joint major, offered by the Department of English and the Department of Global Humanities within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, explores relationships between English literature and global humanities; students plan their program in consultation with advisors from both departments. The 120-unit program combines the English major's standard lower-division requirement (two 100-level and four 200-level courses) and 20 upper-division units (minimum four at the 400 level, including four focused on Canadian or Indigenous literatures) with 15 lower-division Global Humanities units and 20 upper-division Global Humanities units. Students may pursue a concentration such as Art and Material Culture, Hellenic Studies, Mythologies, or Public Engagement and Intellectual Culture, and must maintain an overall and program cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0. Remaining units are completed as electives chosen in consultation with an academic advisor.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This joint major is declared after admission to Simon Fraser University rather than through a separate application. General direct entry to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences requires 'a minimum of five approved Grade 12 courses, including all required courses', with 'English Studies 12 (min 70%)' or 'English First Peoples 12 (min 70%)'; admission is based on an evaluation of all approved Grade 11 and 12 courses rather than a fixed numeric average. English-language proficiency follows SFU's general scale (IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0). To declare and remain in the English and Global Humanities joint major, students must maintain 'an overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and upper division overall CGPA of at least 2.0, and program CGPA and upper division program CGPA of at least 2.0.'
