Overview

The English and History joint major, offered by the Department of English and the Department of History within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, combines the study of literary classics and contemporary literature with historical inquiry across multiple regions and periods. Students complete 120 units: the English component follows the standard major's lower-division requirement of two 100-level and four 200-level courses plus 20 upper-division units (minimum four at the 400 level, including four focused on Canadian or Indigenous literatures); the History component requires 18 lower-division units, with at least six completed before enrolling in 300-division work and nine before 400-division work, plus 24 upper-division units including at least one course from each of four regional and thematic groups (Africa/Asia/Middle East, the Americas, Europe, and Global/Comparative). Students may add a concentration such as British and Irish History, Early Modern World History, or Middle Eastern and Islamic History, and must maintain an overall cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This joint major is declared after admission to Simon Fraser University rather than through a separate application. General direct entry to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences requires 'a minimum of five approved Grade 12 courses, including all required courses', with 'English Studies 12 (min 70%)' or 'English First Peoples 12 (min 70%)'; admission is based on an evaluation of all approved Grade 11 and 12 courses rather than a fixed numeric average. English-language proficiency follows SFU's general scale (IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0). To declare and remain in the English and History joint major, students must maintain 'an overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and upper division overall CGPA of at least 2.0, and program CGPA and upper division program CGPA of at least 2.0.'
