Program details

Overview

This certificate trains students to operate and maintain power-generation and building-mechanical systems at the fourth-class level, and is accredited by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). Coursework covers prime movers, heat engines, refrigeration, HVAC systems and electrical controls, preparing graduates to write the TSSA 4A and 4B examinations. Students complete a mandatory three-month unpaid work placement to accumulate the on-site steam time required for a fourth-class operating-engineer certificate; the college assists students in locating an eligible placement, which may require relocation within Ontario. The programme runs over three semesters within one academic year at the Main Windsor Campus with a September start. Graduates who obtain TSSA certification can work as fourth-class operating engineers in facilities across Canada, including hospitals, plants and commercial buildings.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with the majority of courses at the College (C), University (U), University/College (M) or Open (O) level, plus Grade 11 or 12 Physics, Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U), and Grade 12 College or University Mathematics (MAP4C, MCT4C or equivalent); Grade 12 Physics or Chemistry is recommended. Applicants must be 18 years old to write the TSSA examinations. Mature applicants without an OSSD are directed to St. Clair College's general admission-procedures page. The programme admits in September at the Main Windsor Campus. No English-proficiency scores are published on the programme's own page; St. Clair's institution-wide standard for diploma and certificate programmes applies to international applicants: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 60, PTE Academic 52, CAEL 60, CELPIP General 7.0 in each module, or Duolingo English Test 110.
