Overview
The Power Engineering Technician Diploma is a two-year Ontario College Diploma delivered on campus at St. Clair College's main Windsor campus. The programme follows the Standardized Power Engineers Examination Committee (SOPEEC) syllabus and prepares students for Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) examinations leading to 4th and 3rd Class Power Engineer certification. Students train to operate and troubleshoot energy systems in industrial power plants, electrical generating plants and commercial buildings, using a power systems control room simulator alongside classroom instruction. The curriculum includes cooperative training placements that give students hands-on experience with power plant equipment. The control room simulator replicates real plant operating conditions, letting students practice startup, shutdown and emergency-response procedures in a training environment. Graduates are prepared for roles as power engineers and plant operators across chemical, food, pulp and paper, and electrical generation industries.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with the majority of courses at the College (C), University (U), University/College (M) or Open (O) level, including Grade 11 or 12 Physics, Grade 12 English at the College (C) or University (U) level (ENG4C or ENG4U), and Grade 12 College Mathematics (MAP4C or MCT4C) or a Grade 12 University Mathematics course, or equivalent. Applicants must be 18 years of age to write the TSSA 4th Class examination.
