Program details
Overview
This program studies how choices made by individuals, businesses, governments, and other organizations determine the way a society's resources are used, developing analytical tools that are applied to topics in politics, law, history, the environment, and development alongside core economic theory. The Bachelor of Arts in Economics, housed in the Faculty of Business and Economics, is offered as a three-year, four-year, or Honours degree, with a Minor in Economics available as a secondary credential for students majoring in another subject. The program emphasizes a systematic analytical approach that combines theory with data, preparing graduates for both further academic study and professional work. It suits students who want a grounding in economic reasoning applicable across public and private sectors, and is positioned as a pathway toward graduate study in economics or policy-analyst and similar roles that draw on quantitative and policy analysis skills, rather than a narrowly vocational business credential.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: In addition to meeting The University of Winnipeg's general admission requirements, students intending to major in Economics must have Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S or Applied Mathematics 40S (or the equivalent) from Manitoba high school; students lacking this background can instead complete MATH-0041 and MATH-0042 through the university's Department of Mathematics and Statistics before registering in the required Economics courses. The programme's own page sets no separate English-language score; applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's institution-wide requirement instead: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no component below 4.0 (86 overall/20 per component for tests before January 21, 2026), Duolingo English Test 120, or PTE Academic 58, valid for two years. Waivers are available for three years of full-time English-medium study in Canada, a Canadian Grade 12 English credit of at least 70%, IB Higher Level English (grade 4+), or AP English (grade 3+).
Application Details
Start Date:September, January and May
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
