Program details
Overview
This program examines past individuals and groups, events and processes, and ideas and institutions, analyzing written, oral, material, and visual sources around themes including colonization, race, gender, and class. Departmental strengths include Canadian history, Indigenous history, the history of medicine and science, world history, the history of art, and oral history. The Bachelor of Arts in History is available as a three-year, four-year, or Honours degree, with a minor option for students majoring in another field, and a joint Master of Arts is offered with the University of Manitoba for students continuing to graduate study. Delivery is on the University's Portage Avenue campus in Winnipeg; first-year study includes two introductory history courses and an academic writing course alongside electives. Experiential components include field courses near Riding Mountain, food history projects, cultural immersion experiences, and museum and gallery internships. The program suits students who want small classes and close mentorship, and points toward careers in teaching, research, museums, libraries, archives, business, law, government, and journalism.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The programme's own page states no field-specific high-school course requirements for History: applicants need only meet The University of Winnipeg's general undergraduate admission requirements. It also states no programme-specific English-language-proficiency score; applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's institution-wide requirement instead, satisfied through IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no component below 4.0 (86 overall/20 per component for tests taken before January 21, 2026), Duolingo English Test 120, or PTE Academic 58, among the university's other accepted tests; scores older than two years are not accepted. Waivers are available to applicants with three years of full-time English-medium study in Canada, a Canadian Grade 12 English credit of at least 70%, IB Higher Level English (grade 4+), or AP English (grade 3+).
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
