Indigenous Languages is an interdisciplinary program focused on Indigenous language revitalization, planning, and communication. Core courses in Indigenous language learning and reclamation methods, including oral immersion in Michif, Cree, or Ojibwe, help students grow as proficient speakers and as proponents of language revitalization, supported by experiential learning opportunities. The program comprises three Certificate options of 30 credit hours each, which can lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree offered in three-year, four-year, or Honours format; students may also combine the language study with an Integrated Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Arts degree to prepare for teaching Indigenous languages in K-12 classrooms. A new Anishinaabemowin language immersion option, supported by Manitoba provincial funding, is in development for Indigenous students. Graduates join a community working in Indigenous-language learning, research, and teaching.
