Program details
Overview
French Studies, offered through the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures, covers French language, linguistics, and literature alongside related fields such as philosophy, sociology, history, and Indigenous studies. Language courses address writing, translation, and stylistics; linguistics courses cover phonetics, morphology, syntax, and lexicology; and literature courses examine major movements, periods, and genres from France, Canada, and the wider Francophone world. The program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in French Studies, offered in three-year, four-year, or Honours format, and can also be taken as a Minor alongside another major. Students registering for their first French Studies course take an online placement test to determine an appropriate starting course. Graduates often pursue careers in teaching, translation and interpretation, government, publishing, and other fields where bilingualism is an asset.
