Overview

Philosophy at the University of Winnipeg is a Bachelor of Arts offered in three-year, four-year, and Honours formats as a Major, with a Minor also available. The department teaches philosophy through a historical approach, working through texts from across periods and from a range of global origins. Sample courses named on the program page include introductory philosophy, philosophy of art, the history of philosophy from classical antiquity through existentialism, moral philosophy, health care and bioethics, philosophy of law, philosophy of nature, environmental ethics, and the history of educational ideas. Delivery is on the Winnipeg campus under the university's general admission requirements, with no specific high school courses required. The page cites analyzing complex questions, constructing arguments, and debating issues as skills the program develops, and lists education, journalism, research, government, administration, counselling, policy-making, business, and law as career areas graduates move into, alongside a stated track record of graduates being accepted into prestigious graduate programs in Canada and abroad. The program suits students who want a text-based, historically organized approach to philosophical study, whether as preparation for graduate work in philosophy or as a foundation for careers that draw on argumentative and analytical skills.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The program page defers to The University of Winnipeg's general admission requirements and states that no specific high school courses are required. Applicants whose first language is not English, and who are not from an English-exempt country, must meet the university's English proficiency requirement, set out on The University of Winnipeg's own admission requirements page: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall; TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with no component below 4.0 for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026 (86 overall with no component below 20 for tests taken before that date); Duolingo English Test 120; Pearson PTE Academic 58; CAEL 60 (CAEL online 70); LanguageCert Academic 67; or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 180, with results no more than two years old. International applicants apply online through the university's application portal and pay a non-refundable CAD $120 application fee, with official transcripts sent directly from the issuing institution to the Admissions Office; recommended international deadlines are June 15 for Fall (September), October 15 for Winter (January), and February 15 for Spring (May), and applying three to four months ahead is encouraged to allow time for study-permit processing.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
