Program details
Overview
This Master of Arts specializes in curatorial practices within the broader Cultural Studies program, combining theoretical seminars with hands-on curatorial work. Students examine critical issues in the study of visual culture and engage with both historical and contemporary curatorial principles, then apply this through a practicum placement with a partnered art institution. It is a course-based degree rather than a thesis program, with an expected completion time of 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time, and a maximum of three years; the program begins each September on the University of Winnipeg campus. It is intended for students who already hold an Honours or four-year Bachelor of Arts in Art History or a related field that provides grounding in cultural, literary, textual, or visual studies, such as anthropology, history, or fine arts, though applicants from other academic backgrounds are considered individually. The combination of coursework and practicum placement suits students aiming for curatorial, gallery, or museum-related careers rather than doctoral research.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.5
Admission Requirements: Applicants should hold an Honours or 4-year BA in Art History, or in a field preparing them in cultural, literary, textual or visual studies (e.g. Anthropology, History, Fine Arts), with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 out of 4.5; other degrees or experience are considered case by case. As one of the programmes that sets its own English-language thresholds rather than the university's standard minimums, its requirement is TOEFL overall 5 with no component below 4.5 (or 100 overall/22 per component for tests taken before January 21, 2026), IELTS 7.5, Duolingo 125, or LanguageCert 81, with results valid for two years. The online application, due by February 1 for a September start, must include transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended and, where applicable, official English test scores sent directly from the testing agency.
Application Details
Start Date:September
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens, permanent residents and refugees) apply directly to the University of Winnipeg: for the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Kinesiology and Science the suggested deadline is July 2 for Fall (September) entry, November 1 for Winter (January) entry and March 1 for Spring (May) entry; the Faculty of Education recommends March 1 for high-school and mature applicants, with a final deadline of June 1 subject to space. International applicants are advised to apply by June 15 (Fall, shown on the live page as an 'extended' deadline), October 15 (Winter) or February 15 (Spring). All of these are suggested rather than firm cut-offs: late applications may still be considered, and admission runs on an effectively rolling basis until a term is full. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
