Overview
Art History (MA) is a one-year, course-based master's program in the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto, with fields in Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern, and Modern and Contemporary art. It emphasizes the research, writing, and teaching relevant to careers in academia, curatorial work, art consultation, heritage programs, cultural journalism, or secondary-school teaching, with faculty supervising work spanning Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, Asian, African, Architecture, and Modern and Contemporary art. MA students do not write a thesis and are not assigned a supervisor; instead they complete 3.0 graduate full-course equivalents, drawn from at least three of the program's four historical fields (with no more than 2.0 credits from any one field) and at least two of a defined set of geographic and thematic areas. The program is delivered in person at the St. George campus and can be completed full-time in one year (three sessions) or part-time in two years (six sessions).
Requirements
Admission Requirements: A strong overall grade average in art history and closely related subjects, with at least a B+ average in recent senior art history courses; outstanding applicants with other academic backgrounds may also be considered. Applicants are admitted under the General Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies in addition to these departmental requirements.
