Program details

Overview

This two-year diploma covers the maintenance and operation of compressors, pumps, electrical generators, steam turbines, water treatment systems and cooling towers, alongside refrigeration systems and heating and power plants, leading toward 3rd class power engineer certification. The first year prepares students for 4th class power engineer exams and matches the content of the one-year certificate, so students who already hold 4th class certification can enter directly into the second year. The second year builds on that foundation and prepares students for the 3rd class exams.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: TRU publishes one set of entry requirements on this program's page, attached to the first year (the 4th Class material the one-year certificate also covers): high school graduation or equivalent, or mature-student status; English 11 at 60% or higher; and Math 11 at 60% or higher. You must also supply CSA-approved 6-inch boots, clear safety glasses and coveralls. ADVANCED ENTRY: if you already hold 4th Class certification from a provincial safety authority you receive credit for the first year and enter the second year of the diploma directly. The second year builds towards the 3rd Class power engineer examinations, and the program follows the Standardized Power Engineers Examination Committee material used for the Technical Safety BC exams. TRU states that this program is also open to international students.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to TRU: for the September (Fall) intake the deadline is 1 May, for January (Winter) it is 1 September, and for the May (Summer) intake it is 1 January; applications for most programs open 1 October, and a deadline falling on a weekend or statutory holiday moves to the next working day. International applicants follow the same intake structure with deadlines of 1 May (September), 1 October (January) and 1 February (May); TRU still reviews later applications where space remains, though high-volume programs can close early, so admission runs on a rolling basis around these published cut-offs for the 2027 entry cycle. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
