Program details

Overview

This graduate program leads to a Master's degree in computer science from Université de Montréal, delivered full-time or part-time through day classes on the Montreal campus. Students choose between a thesis-based track focused on independent research, a non-thesis track completed through coursework, directed work, or an internship, and a professional stream in machine learning that includes a mandatory industry placement. Within these tracks, students can specialize in one of several concentrations, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational biology, theoretical and quantum computing, programming and software engineering, operations research, or imaging and graphics, or follow a general stream without a declared specialization. Students in applicable artificial intelligence and machine learning concentrations have access to Mila, Quebec's AI research institute, and international exchange opportunities are available. The program is aimed at holders of a bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field who want to deepen their technical expertise, pursue a specific area of specialization, and, for those on the thesis track, take part in supervised research within the department's laboratories.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This programme's own page does not publish a supplementary minimum grade or language-test score, referring applicants instead to Universite de Montreal's general admission requirements. Admission requires a relevant bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field, with files assessed on overall academic quality rather than a published minimum average. Because instruction across UdeM is in French, applicants schooled in another language must satisfy the university's institution-wide French requirement through an accepted test - DELF (B2 where a programme sets that threshold), DALF C1 or C2, TEF (Etudes, Canada or TEFaQ), or TCF (Canada, Quebec or tout public), scored as the average of oral and written comprehension and no older than 24 months - or by showing recognised prior French-medium schooling or completion of UdeM's francisation pathway; there is no institution-wide IELTS/TOEFL requirement since French is the language of instruction. Applicants may be admitted without a confirmed thesis supervisor but must secure one within a set deadline. The 45-credit programme is offered thesis-based or non-thesis, full-time or part-time.

Application Details

Start Date: September and January
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the Universite de Montreal: for fall entry, undergraduate applications from Quebec CEGEP-only candidates close 1 March and from university-enrolled or non-Quebec candidates close 1 February, except Faculty of Music (15 January for all); graduate applications close 1 February. Winter entry closes 1 November (undergraduate) or 1 September (graduate); summer closes 1 April or 1 February. International applicants, whatever extension a programme's domestic deadline may carry, must submit by 1 April (fall), 1 August (winter) or 1 December (summer) to allow time for immigration processing. These are the university-wide default dates for the 2027 entry cycle; UdeM notes each programme's own descriptive sheet takes precedence. None are rolling; each is a fixed cut-off. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
